Advocacy

Changing the system

Half of this work is asking farms about surplus produce. The other half is arguing publicly that a country wasting a large share of its food has a solvable problem.

What we argue for

Canada does not have a food production problem. It has a distribution problem and a waste problem, and both of them are the result of decisions rather than accidents.

8.8 million tonnes of edible food is wasted in Canada every year (Second Harvest and Value Chain Management International, 2024). 24.0% of people in Canada lived in a food-insecure household in 2025, about 9.8 million people (PROOF, University of Toronto, 2026).

Those two figures belong side by side, and most of the time they are not put there. Putting them there is the advocacy half of this organization. Students can make that case in their own school, with the sources attached.

A national target for surplus produce

UN Sustainable Development Goal 12, target 12.3, commits the world to halving per capita food waste at retail and consumer level by 2030 and to reducing food losses along production and supply chains. Canada has signed up to that target. We argue that a commitment that specific deserves a published measure for produce that never leaves the farm, because what is not counted does not get reduced.

Organics out of landfill

The Government of Ontario reports that most of the food and organic waste from Ontario businesses and institutions is sent to disposal. The Government of Canada identifies landfills as a large source of the country’s methane emissions, and its Landfill Methane Regulations set out to reduce them. Edible produce should never enter that stream. That is the case we make.

Young people and food policy

Food policy in this country is written in rooms where young people are rarely present. The people who will live with the consequences longest have the least say in it.

The research behind our work
