About us
Why we exist
Canada has 189,874 farms (Statistics Canada, Census of Agriculture 2021). 24.0% of people in Canada lived in a food-insecure household in 2025, about 9.8 million people (PROOF, University of Toronto, 2026).
The food exists. The distance between the farm and the food bank is the problem.
Down
The gap is not a mystery. It is measured and published. According to Second Harvest and Value Chain Management International (2024), 8.8 million tonnes of edible food is wasted in Canada every year. Set that against food insecurity in Canada, and the work is building the farm list and showing growers what a farm gains.
The other half is hunger. Food bank visits in March 2025 were 99.4% higher than in March 2019, nearly double (Food Banks Canada, HungerCount 2025). That is the cost of wasted food, and the answer is working with farms, talking to growers and what students gain by doing it.
Where the surplus starts
Why we exist
Every chapter starts by building the farm list for its assigned area, then asks each farm about surplus and grade-out produce before it is disced back into a field or lost to landfill and methane.
Disced back into a field means ploughed under and lost. A food bank or food rescue organization may be able to collect that produce, and a student with a list can ask the question, to our quality and standards. That role is what students gain.
Often nobody has put the farm and the food bank in touch. Asking the question, every week, is a step toward a food system that wastes less.

Canada grows enough food. Distribution is where it fails.
The food already exists. It is grown, it is edible, and it is thrown away.
What a chapter does
Once a week, at lunch.
- Forty five minutes, weekly
- 8 to 12 students
- Every yes handed to a food bank
