The goals

Our commitment

The Neighbour’s Table is aligned to three United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Goal 12 is the one we exist to serve. Goal 2 and Goal 13 follow from the same act, because food sent to landfill fed nobody and warmed the planet.

Goal 2

Zero Hunger: end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture. 24.0% of people in Canada lived in a food-insecure household in 2025, about 9.8 million people. PROOF, University of Toronto, 2026.

Goal 12

Responsible Consumption and Production. Target 12.3: by 2030, halve per capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels and reduce food losses along production and supply chains, including post-harvest losses.

Goal 13

Climate Action: take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. The UN Environment Programme reports that food loss and waste is a significant source of global greenhouse gas emissions, and the Government of Canada identifies landfills as a large source of the country’s methane emissions.

The target

Target 12.3 has two limbs: halving food waste at the retail and consumer levels, and reducing losses along production and supply chains. The second is ours.
