For food banks

The Neighbour’s Table is a student-run nonprofit. Chapters at Canadian high schools ask farms one question, whether they have produce they cannot sell, and hand every yes to a food bank or food rescue organization that collects it with its own vehicle. If you run one, we want to hear from you.

Tell us the area you can collect from, what produce you can take and in what quantities. Once you confirm in writing what you can collect, chapters in your area can introduce farms to you.

What a chapter sends you is an introduction to a farm with produce to give. Until a local food bank has confirmed in writing that it can collect from an area and take that kind of volume, chapters give farms the contact of Second Harvest’s From the Farm program, which publishes free farm pickup of surplus and grade-outs of any volume across Canada. Food banks in Canada recorded close to 2.2 million visits in March 2025 (Food Banks Canada, HungerCount 2025). What is useful to us is set out on its own page.

What farms have to give varies with the season and the region.

The case for this work is in the numbers. Food banks in Canada recorded close to 2.2 million visits in March 2025 (Food Banks Canada, HungerCount 2025). Food bank visits in March 2025 were 99.4% higher than in March 2019, nearly double (Food Banks Canada, HungerCount 2025). A third of food bank visits in March 2025 were by children (Food Banks Canada, HungerCount 2025). 24.0% of people in Canada lived in a food-insecure household in 2025, about 9.8 million people (PROOF, University of Toronto, 2026). At the same time, 8.8 million tonnes of edible food is wasted in Canada every year (Second Harvest and Value Chain Management International, 2024). The food exists. The distance between the field and the food bank is the problem.

Write to us and tell us which area your organization can collect from, the quantities you can take, how much notice you need and whether there is anything you cannot take. We work to what you tell us.
