Food insecurity in Canada

Food insecurity in Canada is widespread, and it is measured.

24.0% of people in Canada lived in a food-insecure household in 2025, about 9.8 million people. PROOF, University of Toronto, 2026.

Food bank use tells the same story from another direction. Food banks in Canada recorded close to 2.2 million visits in March 2025. Food bank visits in March 2025 were 99.4% higher than in March 2019, nearly double. A third of food bank visits in March 2025 were by children. Food Banks Canada reports all three figures in HungerCount 2025.

Feed Ontario’s Hunger Report 2025 shows the same pressure in Ontario, including among people who have jobs.

The food exists. Access to it is the problem.

Our work

What the organization does about it: ask farms whether they have produce they cannot sell, hand every yes to a food bank or food rescue organization that collects it, and argue in public for a food system that wastes less.

What we do

Ask, introduce, record. The page sets out each part, the named roles inside a chapter, and how a farm’s yes is handed to an organization that collects it.
