This season

The harvest season, and what a chapter works on through the year.

Rows of cabbage growing in a field

This page sets out the chapter year. September is for setting up. Late summer to late autumn is the main season for field produce. Winter is for list building and records, spring is for contact before the next harvest, and June is for handover.

Autumn is the heaviest part of the Canadian growing year and the part where surplus is most visible. Apples, squash, root vegetables and field crops come in at volume, buyers take what their specifications allow, and what is left is edible and unsold. Chapters approved this season will work their farm lists through this window.

A chapter recruits only once the principal has approved in writing, a Teacher Advisor is named and the Chapter Agreement is signed. Members then take named roles: Chapter Lead, Deputy Lead, Outreach Editor, List Builder, Follow-up Clerk and Records and Hours Clerk.

Harvest is the moment.

Every route into The Neighbour’s Table starts in the same section: farms with surplus, students who want a role, schools, and food banks that can collect produce this season.

Your part

The most useful things anyone can do this season are to bring a chapter to a school that has none, point a farm with surplus to this site, or, for a food bank, confirm in writing what it can collect.

For farms

If produce is coming off your fields that will not reach a buyer, one page sets out what we ask and what happens next. It takes a minute to read and a message to start.
