The Neighbour’s Table

Surplus food

In the hands of the people who need it.

This is the campaign, and it is also the whole of what we do. Food that was grown to be eaten should be eaten.

Canada grows a great deal of food. Canada has 189,874 farms, according to Statistics Canada’s Census of Agriculture 2021. At the same time, 24.0% of people in Canada lived in a food-insecure household in 2025, about 9.8 million people, according to PROOF at the University of Toronto (2026).

The food exists. The distance between the field and the people who need food is the problem, and narrowing it starts with someone willing to write to a farm and ask one question.

Grown here. Eaten here.

The problem

8.8 million tonnes of edible food is wasted in Canada every year, according to Second Harvest and Value Chain Management International (2024). The work section sets out what we do about it.

This campaign runs on people. A chapter at a school, a farm with a season’s surplus, and an organization that collects with its own vehicle: those are the three things it needs.

The work

The Neighbour’s Table is a student-run nonprofit. Chapters at Canadian high schools ask farms one question, whether they have produce they cannot sell, and hand every yes to a food bank or food rescue organization that collects it with its own vehicle.
